Akron Honey expands reach with local partnerships

Brent Wesley Family | Meije

Brent Wesley, known as Wesley the Keeper, has transformed a vacant lot in West Akron, Ohio, into a successful business known as Akron Honey. In 2013, he purchased the lot and began his journey in beekeeping. "We wanted to give our community something to brag about," Wesley said. Starting with a few beehives, Akron Honey now produces honey recognized for its unique flavor.

The company has expanded its reach with products available at Meijer stores across the Greater Cleveland area. "Our honey became known for its taste," explained Wesley. The diverse floral environment of the city contributes to the distinct flavor profile of their honey.

Wesley also expanded operations to East Akron, producing Middlebury Red honey named after the historic area. Innovation plays a key role in Akron Honey's growth, including flavor infusions like habanero peppers and collaborations such as Bourbon Barrel honey with Cleveland Whiskey.

In 2021, Wesley committed full-time to Akron Honey after various careers including music and corporate management. He attributes success to customer focus and community support. "Our honey lovers are at the center of every decision we make," he noted.

The quality of Akron Honey caught the attention of Alan Jordan from Fairfax Meijer Market and Stacy Grooters-Farr from Meijer Local Sourcing team. They included it in Meijer's Local Favorites program, expanding distribution across nine supercenters in Cleveland.

Beyond business growth, Wesley focuses on community engagement through events like Akron Honey Market Day and educational initiatives for children about bees and food production. "It’s about bringing people together," Wesley said regarding their annual block party event.

Wesley views beekeeping as both peaceful and educational, offering insights into disciplined practices that could benefit humanity's challenges. With ongoing support from partners like Meijer, Wesley is optimistic about continuing growth while maintaining community ties.

"They’re more than just a retailer to us; they’re partners," said Wesley about Meijer's collaboration with his brand.
