The Meijer store in Canton, Michigan, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this week. Originally opened on November 19, 1974, the store was notable for being the first Meijer location in the Detroit market and the largest in company history at that time, covering 250,000 square feet. It introduced the "hypermarket" format to the United States, a concept popular in Europe at the time.
To commemorate this milestone, an in-store celebration was held for customers. Additionally, a donation was made to the Plymouth/Canton Optimists Club. This organization supports local families through scholarships and community events.
Lynn Wadsworth has been part of the Canton store almost since its inception. She began working there as a high school student and accepted a full-time position after graduation. Lynn has appreciated her career with Meijer for its family-friendly atmosphere and opportunities for advancement.
In 1986, Lynn started her first administrative role at the Canton store. Reflecting on her career spanning nearly five decades, she noted significant changes over time, particularly how technology has transformed processes such as job applications and restocking.
A memorable moment for Lynn was meeting Fred Meijer during one of his visits to the store. She recalled him taking time to chat with employees: “He made me feel like we’d know each other forever and as if I were part of the family,” she said. Lynn expressed gratitude for her long tenure with Meijer: “It’s been an honor to have been with Meijer for 47 years.”
