A mother from Rochester, Michigan faced potential eviction after her car broke down, requiring costly repairs. Without transportation, she was unable to work and struggled with bills. In need of assistance for rent and groceries, she turned to the Rochester Area Neighborhood House Food Pantry.
"For her, having food on the table meant one less worry during a challenging time," stated Michael Dreon, executive director of the Rochester Area Neighborhood House Food Pantry. "She could focus on keeping her family safe, avoiding eviction, and stabilizing her finances. Stories like hers remind us of why we’re here and how essential community support is in helping families through setbacks."
The pantry's efforts are supported by partners such as Meijer. The Simply Give program aids the Metro Detroit pantry throughout the year, ensuring it can meet demand during the holiday season when food insecurity intensifies. The pantry collaborates with Meijer's Rochester and Rochester Hills supercenters.
"Our team members are thankful to partner with the Rochester Hills Food Pantry and for our continued support of the communities that we serve and live in," said Loy Crawford Jr., Store Director at Rochester Hills.
Michael noted an increase in need by 20% each year over the past two years. He mentioned that food expenses can consume up to 30% of low-income families' budgets, contributing significantly to their reliance on the pantry.
Simply Give offers flexibility allowing quick response to changing needs. With about 125 items regularly stocked, donations account for roughly 75% of inventory while Simply Give provides the remaining 25%. This ensures availability of canned goods, fresh produce, eggs, and milk.
During Thanksgiving, special meal baskets including a turkey are provided to families for holiday celebrations. Despite rising demand, support from programs like Simply Give has enabled the pantry to maintain these offerings without turning anyone away.
Established 55 years ago by local churches, the Rochester Area Neighborhood House Food Pantry assists over 600 families annually in Rochester and surrounding areas.
"Our mission is to keep families fed and help them through tough times," Michael expressed. "During the holidays, the demand only rises, and it’s thanks to Meijer’s consistent support that we can meet those needs. For so many of our families, it makes all the difference."
