Meijer has expanded its seed donation program, which began as a regional project in 2023, across its six-state footprint to reach more communities. This initiative has evolved from individual store requests to a structured approach involving major seed companies. The Greater Lansing Food Bank (GLFB) is at the forefront of this effort, providing resources to families throughout the Midwest.
"The seed donations from Meijer have enabled us to serve over 800 unique individuals per season," said Mike Tosto, GLFB’s garden project resource specialist. He highlighted the program's significant impact on community outreach.
This year, GLFB aims to distribute full seed racks to partner agencies, ensuring seeds are accessible in local communities. Garden-to-Go kits with organic seeds from Meijer and Burpee support this initiative by empowering individuals to grow their own produce at home.
In 2024, GLFB distributed 16,200 seed packets at their Resource Center in Lansing—up from nearly 11,600 packets in 2023. This spring, they will provide 42,000 seed packets through their Garden-to-Go kit program compared to last year's 36,000 packets. These kits will be distributed across various mid-Michigan communities such as Clare and Charlotte.
The Garden Project extends beyond the Resource Center with outreach across 80 community gardens and partnerships with organizations like the Refugee Development Center and Cristo Rey food pantry. Recently, Forgotten Harvest picked up two pallets of seed racks for distribution in Detroit and its metro area.
The program benefits an estimated 8,200 families within GLFB’s service district. With expanded donations expected this year, greater impact is anticipated after fall data analysis.
In South Lansing's greenhouse, approximately 43,000 plants have been grown using Burpee seeds. Volunteers have contributed over 500 hours sorting seeds and assembling kits for the donation program.
Tomatoes, cucumbers, and squash are popular choices promoted by GLFB for direct seeding among beginners and urban gardeners.
"It’s incredible to see how something as simple as a seed packet can bring a community together," Mike Tosto reflected on the widespread impact of the program.
Looking forward, broader distribution efforts aim to extend benefits from Meijer's partnership further afield.
The commitment to hunger relief and community sustainability is evident through initiatives like this one that foster hope and resilience across Lansing and beyond.
