Providence nurse highlights personal approach in home health and hospice care

Melissa, a nurse who joined Providence in July 2022, has become known for her compassionate approach and strong relationships with patients and their families. She began her nursing career in hospital settings, working in orthopedic/neurology, medical-surgical units, and taking on leadership positions. During the pandemic, she found her calling in home healthcare.

“I just wanted to really know my patients,” Melissa said. “In home health, you build that trust over time. You're in their homes. You meet their pets, you see their photos, you learn their stories. It’s personal. They see you as someone who knows and cares.”

Melissa described how one of her long-term patients transitioned to hospice care after his health declined. The family was initially uncertain about continuing with Providence but ultimately decided to stay because of the connection they had built with Melissa. She advocated for them during the transition and continued to visit as a friend even after handing off the case.

“That family meant so much to me,” she said. “Knowing our hospice team was there made all the difference. Continuity of care is everything. It's not just about doing the job—it's about walking the journey with them.”

Melissa aligns closely with Providence’s mission of serving people in the name of Jesus Christ and believes that nursing goes beyond routine tasks.

She balances her professional responsibilities with time at the gym, caring for grandchildren, looking after a German shepherd, and maintaining a sense of purpose.

“I love this job,” she said simply. “This is where I’m meant to be.”

Currently one of only a few full-time home health nurses at Providence, Melissa sees fewer patients than she did while working in hospitals but values the deeper connections she forms during home visits.

Patients recognize her voice and trust her judgment.

When facing difficult days at work, Melissa relies on faith, family support, and perspective.

“I remind myself it’s just one day. Tomorrow is a new one,” she said. “And then I go to the gym, get a pedicure, read a book, or hang out with my kids and grandkids. That’s how I recharge.”
