At Victorian Village, Wally Sopiarz is more than just a driver; he is a friend to many residents. His willingness to assist goes beyond driving them to medical appointments, shopping trips, and community outings.

A retired Marine and former truck driver with 30 years of experience, Wally understands the value of responsibility and service. "I do this because I can," he says. "It's not about the money; it's about serving people and knowing you're helping someone accomplish something."

Residents appreciate Wally's kindness. One resident shared, "He brought me to go vote and was nice about it. He wouldn't even take a tip." Another noted his friendly demeanor: "He's always friendly and always willing to listen—he loves a good visit."

Wally's thoughtful gestures are common at Victorian Village. Residents recall him bringing cookies or eclairs from Orland Bakery. His dedication in transportation services is evident as well: "He always lingers around to see if someone needs a ride," said one resident. "He's very patient—he even waits for people at their visits."

His career began in construction alongside his father before moving through various roles, including volunteer firefighter and bus driver for special needs children. Most of his career was spent driving tractor-trailers while serving as a union steward.

Jamie mentioned that Wally noticed residents struggled with carrying shopping bags back to their rooms, so he arranged for new shopping carts with Meijer’s manager.

Even independent drivers among the residents benefit from Wally's support. A townhome resident joins outings despite having her own vehicle.

Wally's commitment extends beyond work; he is also a father of three and enjoys playing pool. He maintains humility despite his accomplishments, often saying, "It's just what you're supposed to do." His approach inspires those around him.

At Victorian Village, Wally plays an essential role by providing transportation, conversation, friendship, and assistance. Working 12 to 15 hours weekly allows him flexibility while connecting with those he serves.

"You accomplish something with this job," he states. "People need you, and you find a way to get them where they need to be." For Wally Sopiarz, being more than just a driver makes all the difference in residents' lives.
