Meijer celebrated the holiday season by hosting its 11th annual Very Merry Meijer event, where hundreds of customers and team members were surprised with shopping sprees and gift cards. At every store across the Midwest, Meijer leaders awarded a $1,000 shopping spree to one customer and distributed gift cards to several team members.
The Very Merry Meijer event, which began in 2014, has become an annual tradition aimed at spreading holiday cheer within stores. Ray Hancart, Meijer's Vice President of Communications & Community Engagement, stated: “Our stores look forward to this event every year, and the teamwork and excitement that goes into pulling off each surprise is truly heartwarming. We strive to enrich lives in the communities we serve, and this is an extra special way to continue fulfilling that purpose during the busy holiday season.”
Over the years, more than 4,600 customers have received shopping sprees for holiday gifts and groceries through these events. Recipients are selected randomly while shopping or checking out. Many shared stories of how they planned to use their gifts.
In Charlotte, Michigan, Store Director Angela Clark surprised a couple in the produce section with a $1,000 gift card. The couple was moved to tears as they revealed their struggle with stage 4 cancer and financial constraints due to medical bills.
Similarly, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Store Director Les Collins gifted a mom of five whose children face significant medical challenges. Exhausted financial resources made her especially grateful for Meijer's generosity.
Meijer also honored its employees by surprising three team members per store with $200 gift cards. Zach Sortore from Anderson, Indiana expressed his gratitude: “I was shocked. I didn’t expect this at all and it felt really special... To be picked for this changed my whole month.”
